Day 3

Another motorhome from our RV club was due to come into the camping area during the morning entry time. After calling on the cell phone, we learned that the incoming motorhome would arrive a little later in the morning.

I walked around the area and found that everything looked familiar from our previous visit to the Fairplex in 2000. The usual general-aviation airplanes approached the local airport on a path that takes the planes over part of the RV camping area.

The camping area is under the approach to a nearby airfield

While walking around the area I saw a motorhome with a familiar picture on the back. It was a painting of a train pulled by a steam engine that I saw once in the San Francisco Bay Area.

I'm guessing that this motorhome belongs to a rail fan

A fourth motorhome in our group was supposed to be in camp already. I called to find out where Paul and Rosemary were located. I was surprised to find that they were already in camp. I followed Paul's directions and found their rig — which had a big puddle of water next to it — was not very far from our site. The big puddle was a remainder of the rain that had taken place on a previous day.

I knocked on the door and was in for a surprise. Inside was Paul and Rosemary of course, however, Steve and Susan were there as well. They are new members of our RV club and I didn't know they were going to attend the FMCA convention.

After leaving Paul and Rosemary, I placed a call to Tom and Nora to find that they would arrive in about an hour. This gave me time to find the parking supervisor to talk to him about the empty space next to our motorhome. I explained that the site had been vacated and that our friends would be arriving soon. He said that all I had to do was point out our friend's motorhome when they arrived and he would redirect them to our area.

With another phone call to Tom, I found that he was only 15 minutes away from the entrance. I got into position where I could point out Tom's rig. He was directed over to our street where I was prepared to point the way. However, Tom stopped so I could get aboard where I was able to show him the way to his waiting campsite. This allowed Tom and Nora to be a lot closer to the action than if they had to go with the flow.

It was good to see Tom and Nora again after our motorhomes had come from opposite directions starting several hundred miles apart. Now all of our RV club motorhomes were in the camp area. As it would turn out, the empty site that had been reserved for Kevin and Tina would remain empty during our entire stay at the Fairplex.

I was reminded how close we were to a general-aviation airport when a small helicopter swooped over the camping area and a small airplane descended as it came in for a landing. The airport is located across the street from the Pomona Raceway which is next to the main motorhome camping area.

Our group decided to go out to eat for our evening meal. Tom and I thought about going to the Mexican restaurant that we both liked during our last visit to Pomona. Between my mapping software and Tom's fancy GPS receiver, the location of the restaurant was determined. However, Tom's GPS receiver told us that the restaurant had a new name. Even though the new name also was that of a Mexican food establishment, we expected that the dining experience might be different than our previous visit in March of 2000.

We had four couples in two cars when we headed out for dinner. As it turned out, the restaurant with the new name had a similar menu as the old one. All of us with the exception of Tina ordered familiar Mexican dishes. When our food arrived, Tina had a whole fish on her plate. Even though it was obvious that the critter could not be returned to the sea, it still had its head, tail and fins.

Tina has a fishy meal at a Mexican restaurant

I had hoped that the new restaurant would be as good as the previous establishment at this address. Even though the food was pretty good with good sized portions, it was not as good as when we ate here in 2000. Oh well, nothing lasts forever.

After a fun dinner, our group went back to our motorhomes and called it a day.
