Fairplex — First Day In

The other members of our RV club all had entry times that were later than our time to go into the convention. It took us only 15 minutes to arrive at the entry gate at about 9AM. Our "campsite" was close to the area we were in the first time we attended an FMCA convention in Pomona. This was the first time we attended a convention where pads were required under the levelers to reduced damage to the pavement. Two members of our RV club would be arriving with the afternoon entry of motorhomes.

We are in our campsite for most of the week

I talked to the parking manager to see if I could get a space reserved for our friends. He kept a space across the street and behind us vacant for our colleagues' motorhome. They were scheduled to come in during the afternoon arrivals.

I did the usual thing done on the first day of entry; I watched all the activity as hundreds of motorhomes entered the Fairplex and were parked. This process runs very smoothly at Pomona, all directed by a team of parking volunteers. I'm guessing that many of the people on the team had experience from prior RV conventions.

The motorhomes are lined up nose-to-nose in neatly spaced lines. Just enough room between motorhomes is allowed to open slide-outs and a tight parking space for a towed vehicle. This was the first time that pads were required to be placed under levelers. This was done to reduce damage to the asphalt pavement. Over the years motorhomes have gotten bigger and much heavier with a large percentage of that weight resting on the leveler pads.

This is our new neighborhood at the Fairplex

Kevin and Tina were supposed to come into the camping area after 12 noon, so I decided to call them at 11:30 to let them know that I had a space reserved for them. As it turned out, they had been allowed to come in early and were nearly at there assigned site about four or five blocks away from our space. After they were settled in I walked over to their motorhome to visit for a short time.

Tina wanted to go exploring for a grocery store to replenish their supplies. They were towing, so they came by our motorhome to pick Kay and I up to go for the ride. Fortunately, Kevin remembered where a shopping area was located north of the fairgrounds. It didn't take very long until we were on Foothill boulevard in La Verne, California. This street has just about every type of shopping experience available.

After visiting a few stores it was about time to return to our motorhomes. However, one of us spotted an ice cream store located in the far corner of the shopping center where we had just come out of a store. It was unanimous that we should check out what kinds of delicious frozen dessert selections were available. I think that the name of the place is Mary Moo Ice Cream. The ice cream was ohhhh soooo good.

The ice cream treat was a nice way to end our trip into town. It didn't take long for Kevin to find his way back to the camping area where he dropped Kay and me off at our motorhome. As we arrived I noticed that the site next to us was empty. The motorhome in that site had a problem with its generator. The owner had been working on it all the time we were there before going to town. I learned that the guy gave up on his generator and moved to the area that had electric hookups.
