Our Trip to Wichita
Christmas 1995

Saturday, 12-30-95

We left Wichita at 10:30 this morning and our son was scheduled to leave by plane at 1PM. The temperature was 28 degrees and there was a little snow left on the ground. The trip to Oklahoma City was uneventful.

When we arrived the temperature was in the low 50’s. It felt almost balmy. We had lunch in OK City. While eating, it occurred to me that our son might be flying over our heads at that very moment. We still had a few days of road travel ahead of us, but our son would be home that afternoon. After lunch we were driving west on I-40 and it felt good to be heading in the general direction of home.

Nothing special happened during most of the drive that day, but we were treated to a beautiful sunset over the Texas panhandle. The sun shined through the clouds and created a multicolor display like I've never seen before. It was as if the water or ice crystals in the clouds were breaking up the light into its individual components. Then the resulting colored light was projected as if the clouds were a rear projection screen. It was quite a display to end the day. We drove on into the night and finally bedded down at the KOA campground in Tucumcari, New Mexico.
