Our Trip to Wichita
Christmas 1995

We left Amarillo this morning at about 10AM. The roads were mostly clear of ice and snow by the time we got back on I-40 heading for Oklahoma City. The trip to OK City was uneventful and FLAT. When we got there we turned north on highway I-35. It felt good to see the signs for Wichita. But the adventure continued about eighty miles north of Oklahoma City. One of the windshield wipers came loose at one end, so we decided to pull off at a roadside parking area.

As we pulled off there was a station wagon ahead of us that was producing huge clouds of black and gray smoke out the dual exhaust pipes. While I was fixing the wiper blade on our motorhome, a young woman got out of her car and asked if I had a cellular telephone to call a tow truck. She said that they had just blown an engine. We ended up rescuing a young family, with two little girls, from the icy cold.

The woman’s husband stayed with their car to watch over their belongings and to be available if a tow truck showed up. We took the young woman and her two little girls to a "Truck stop" where she could call a tow truck. I originally was going to leave them at the truck stop and continue on our way. They were going to have the tow truck driver pick them up at the truck stop. As we drove to the truck stop, we visited and got to know these nice people. By the time we arrived at the truck stop, I had decided to stay with them and take them back to their car. I was also concerned about the young man waiting in the cold with their family car. I figured we should get his family back to him so he would know they were okay.

After the young woman arranged for a tow truck, we went back to their car and invited them all to stay in the motorhome to keep warm. We stayed with them until the tow truck arrived. We wanted to make sure the little girls stayed warm. We traded phone numbers so we could get in touch with them later to see how their trip went for them after we saw them off in the tow truck. This delayed our trip only about an hour and a half, but it really felt good to help a nice young family stranded along the road.

We continued on our way and arrived at Kay’s brother's house at about 7:30PM Tuesday night. It sure was nice to get here. We looked ahead to a week to visit with our families. It is the first time in 34 years we have been in Wichita at Christmas.
