Our Trip to Wichita
Christmas 1995

This morning we left the campground at about 8:30 and headed for Arizona. It was sunny most of the way. As we went up in altitude, we started seeing snow on the ground at about 5000 feet just before we reached Flagstaff. In Flagstaff we stopped to eat lunch and gas up the motorhome. There were only three gallons left in the tank. That was a bit close.

We decided to try to get to Albuquerque for the night. As we left Flagstaff we went through a small snow flurry. When a truck passed us it threw up mist on the windshield. When I turned on the wipers, nothing happened. They had frozen to the windshield. I had to turn on the defroster to free the wipers. After living in California all these years, I will have to get used to using all this cold weather stuff all over again.

Then the sun came out and the view was beautiful. We could see fantastic cloud formations and rain showers out in the distance. As we descended in altitude we caught up with a rain shower. After the shower we had mostly cloudy weather the remainder of the way to New Mexico. As we crossed the border into New Mexico we saw colorful red rock canyons dusted with snow. The snow got heavier as we approached Gallup New Mexico and the roads were wet with melted snow. The sun went down as we drove into town. Because it was supposed to get cold and the highway was going to be icy, we decided to stop for the night at the KOA campground in Gallup*.

*The KOA mentioned above was on the west side of town; it now is a USA RV Park.
