Our Trip to Wichita
Christmas 1995

Saturday, 12-16-95

We started our trip this morning with a bit of excitement. We were on California Highway 85 heading south when a pickup truck dropped a piece of plywood on the road. The plywood flew up and hit the center of the motorhome's front bumper. The size of the wood was roughly 18 inches by 36 inches and maybe a 1/2 inch thick. As it went under the motorhome, it made two loud crashing sounds. I pulled off the highway to see if there was any evidence of damage. I saw no sign of a problem. We had been on the road all of about 15 minutes. The loud sounds must have been caused by the wood hitting the front suspension and the rear axle.

We got underway again and the rest of our drive on Saturday was very nice. We drove down I-5 to to the turn-off for Bakersfield, then across the Mojave Desert to Needles California. We saw the sun set as we were leaving Barstow. Out in the desert at night we saw a light shining up on the clouds in the distance. The only city in that direction was Las Vegas about 80 miles away. It was hard to believe that we could see it that far away. As we got closer to Needles, we saw a smaller lighted area on the clouds to the south of the large lighted area. That turned out to be to lights of Laughlin Nevada. We didn’t go to either place. We ended up spending the night at the KOA campground at Needles.
