Day 10

When we arrived at Jim and Donna's place a man was cutting up the damaged branches that were felled by the previous night's storm. All in all, the damage in this neighborhood was not very bad compared to other areas.

You might think we would become bored by doing the same thing every day. In this case, we just can't get enough puppy time. As with previous days, we began with watching puppies. They were released outdoors in the backyard where they began exploring the big world outside.

The puppies soon tired of the grassy outdoors and were returned to the house for lunch. They didn't take long to find their mother where she went to the feeding mode. It was cute seeing all five little puppies tussling with each other to get the best location for their meal.

While the feeding frenzy was taking place the owners of the father of the puppies paid Jim and Donna a visit. They stopped by to take a look at the little ones and to select the puppy that they would take home with them after the puppies had been weaned. It was interesting to get to see the daddy dog.

After their lunch it was time for the puppies to take a nap. With the puppies sleeping I went back outdoors where I sat on the back porch enjoying a pleasant breeze. It has been unusual during our stay for the temperature to be low enough to enjoy anything outdoors. While on the porch I had a nice phone conversation with my sister.

Our plan for the evening was to visit Donna's sister, Debbie at her house to watch fireworks. Jim would be contributing a box of "Safe and sane" fireworks. We had a short drive to Newton, Kansas to Debbie's house. As Jim parked the car, fireworks were going off all over the neighborhood.

As we arrived in the backyard, a volley of big rockets took off from out in the middle of the backyard. As far as I could see in all directions I could see full-size, commercial grade fireworks going off in the night sky. I could see no difference in the fireworks, going off around me, from what I've seen local governments and amusement parks use in their big firework shows. There was one small difference, now that I think of it, the show lasted longer. It almost seemed as if there was some sort of competition between the various families as to which one could put up the biggest, brightest and loudest displays.

Debbie has a couple of dogs that went crazy over the fireworks. I haven't seen anything like it. The dogs seemed to have no fear of the fireworks as they ran after the burning sparks as they fluttered in the air. At one point I was sure one of the dogs was going to get burned, however, it became apparent that the dogs were experienced at chasing the flash and bang stuff. They never got quit close enough to get hurt by their activities. Once I got past the fact that the dogs were okay, it was fun to watch them zip around the yard.

More fireworks to drive the dogs nuts

It was time for us to head back to our motorhome at 11 o'clock. I don't remember seeing a fireworks show that lasted until 11 o'clock. Even though the number of rockets bursts had decreased, there still were brightly colored flashed going off in the sky as Jim drove away. The fireworks show we saw was probably the best I've seen.

Jim and Donna took us to our motorhome where we said our goodbyes as we would be leaving for home the following morning. After Jim and Donna had departed, Kay and I would occasionally see a firework burst in the distance until after midnight.
