A Summer Road Trip to Wichita

Day 1

Our first day on the road was uneventful as we made our way along a very bumpy I-80. We drove through familiar California scenery in the mountains. The view was outstanding — the ride was miserable.

Crossing the Sierras is always a scenic trip

Because we got started a bit late we decided to stop for the night at Boomtown in Verdi, Nevada (Number 1 on the map). Being our first night out — we would not stay in the RV park — we found a nice place in the RV parking area. We arrived at five o'clock and we both were hungry

Boomtown — a place familiar to us was our first stop of the trip

Our evening began with a nice meal in one of the casino restaurants. Then it was off to find a slot machine. Kay quickly settled in on a machine that she played most of the night. It didn't take very long for her to begin running up the credits. The numbers just kept going up, then they went back down — up - down — up - down. During her time with that one machine, Kay ran up more credits than the machine could pay off. Then she would run the numbers back down to less than she began with, then back up again.

An unusual motorhome that was parked near our location

I tired quickly after cycling about $20 dollars through the machines. I did okay for a while, but I gave it all back. I figured I'd had enough fun and let the $20 go without sending more down the slot. Kay had started with $30, however, she did better than me. She came out with enough to pay for a tank of fuel.

While Kay was running the numbers up and down, I went to the lounge to listen to the live music. I enjoyed listening to the country rock music coming from Amy Clawson and the five members of her band. They performed country music standards as well as the latest songs on the Country Music Top 40. I thought they did a good job of making the songs their own while remaining true to the originals.

Kay, being a fan of country-rock music, came over to listen with me. We sat through two sets of music before we decided we better call it a day. I had a chance to talk to Ms Clauson and a couple band members. As it turns out. Amy lives in a town we are very familiar with from our crab fishing trips in Oregon. It was a nice way to end the day.
