Balloons Over Albuquerque
October 2002

Trip Summary
The Balloonists’ Prayer
The winds have welcomed you with softness,
The sun has blessed you with his warm hands,
You have flown so high and so well,
That God has joined you in your laughter,
And set you gently back again
Into the loving arms of Mother Earth!

This would be the first time Kay and I targeted Albuquerque as the destination of a trip. In the past, we would simply pass through on our way to some other place or we would stop only for the night.

Our small group made two visits to the Old Town section of Albuquerque; we saw ancient petroglyphs and made a visit to a beautiful Indian casino. All very interesting, however, one of the greatest events I've experienced was the 2002 Hot Air Balloon Fiesta. Two of our party would fly in a hot air balloon and four of us would serve on a balloon chase team. This was an adventure that found me almost at a loss for words. — Yeah, right!

Our trip provided us with familiar adventures as well as new activities. By far the most fun of the new experiences was being part of a hot air balloon crew at the Albuquerque Hot Air Balloon Fiesta. This annual event is a lot of fun and very family friendly. Children of all ages were seen enjoying the spectacle in the midst of all the colorful action. Even though this was a really great RV Fun Trip, there are many ways to visit a Hot Air Balloon Fiesta. I highly recommend it for all.

When we made it home, Kay and I both wished we could just keep going. It was hard for us to leave our little caravan in Albuquerque. However, because we took off on our own we were able to have a lot of fun in Laughlin. Suffice it to say that Kay was very happy with our experience, at the slots.

We arrived home with 35 rolls of exposed film to get developed. I don't know if I will ever see the light of day again when I digitize all those photos. We found that our neighborhood had changed a bit since we left. A few doors down, a house has been torn down to make room for a new mini-mansion. The new house will be next door to the first mini-mansion on our block.

Our motorhome performed well with only one minor problem, the dash air conditioner failed. We found our home-on-wheels to be very comfortable and having our car with us was a real treat. We will be towing a car on future journeys. We are looking forward to future RV Fun Trips.

Kay or Maury took all photos that appear in this story unless otherwise noted.
